Back Pain in Half Term
Fun for the Kids, Murder for Your Back
Half term back pain is a potential hazard to navigate next week during the school half term. May Spring half term is here, the gateway to our summer months. A whole week of good wholesome family fun. If you’re a parent in Bournemouth, Christchurch or Poole, you’ve already got The Look on your face. Equal parts excitement and existential dread.
We love that you’re throwing yourself into it, it’s a great time to remember why we live here in Bournemouth and how lucky we are to be so close to the beach. Yet we also know that by Friday, a fair few of you are going to be walking (or hobbling) through our Clinic door on here Branksome Hill Road.
Here’s our entirely tongue-in-cheek guide to exactly how it’s going to happen…
Bournemouth Pier: The Classic “I’ll Give It a Go”
Bournemouth Seafront, Pier Approach, BH2
The Injury: Climbing wall humiliation followed by a zip wire surprise
Your child wants to try the climbing wall at RockReef on Bournemouth Pier. You say “looks easy enough.” Reader, it is not easy enough. The PierZip zip wire is equally spectacular, transporting brave souls from the 25-foot Pier Tower out over the waves toward the sand and equally humbling. The awkward brace position on landing has a name in our clinic: Emergency Appointment… “can you fit me in first thing?” I hear you say.
Smuggler’s Cove Adventure Golf: The Slow-Burn Injury
Bournemouth Seafront, near the East Cliff, BH1
The Injury: Lumbar rotation through a range last visited longer than you care to remember
Eighteen holes of adventure golf on the Bournemouth seafront sounds perfectly civilised. It is, until hole seven, when you attempt a theatrical trick shot to impress your nine year old, rotate through a range of motion your lumbar spine hasn’t visited since 2019, and hear a noise that is Not A Good Noise. Golf swings, even miniature ones, involve significant rotational load on the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joints. Don’t go too “crazy” at crazy golf.
Upton Country Park: Free Wildlife Trails, Free Back Pain
Upton Country Park, Poole Road, Poole BH17
The Injury: Sustained crouching at beetle height
Upton Country Park near Poole is running free wildlife trails throughout half term and it’s genuinely lovely. What is less lovely is spending 45 minutes crouched at child height pointing at beetles along the woodland paths, then straightening up and discovering your lower back or hip have lodged a formal complaint. Sustained forward flexion in a crouched position is a well documented trigger for lumbar disc irritation, the kind that says “hello David Attenborough” at around 2am.
Brownsea Island: The Neck Pain Special
Ferry from Poole Quay, Town Quay, Poole BH15
The Injury: Three hours of looking upward for ospreys
A ferry from Poole Quay out to Brownsea Island for a guided nature walk with the Dorset Wildlife Trust and the National Trust, beautiful. Seems like an innocent way to avoid any half term back pain problems. The ospreys and red squirrels are genuinely stunning. You will spend three hours with your neck craned skyward looking at them. Sustained cervical extension combined with repeated rotation is a surprisingly reliable route to the kind of neck stiffness that greets you at 3am and sends you Googling “chiropractor near Poole Quay.” Or if it stiffens up on the boat trip back from the island “Chiropractor near me NOW”
Christchurch Food Festival: The Standing-Around Injury
Christchurch Quay, Christchurch BH23 : 23–25 May 2026
The Injury: Asymmetric loading with a child on one shoulder and a pulled pork bap in each hand
The Christchurch Food Festival, just down the road from us along the A35, is a brilliant day out in the sun that we have been promised. It is also three hours of standing on hard ground, carrying a small child on one shoulder with an ice cream, holding four takeaway containers in one hand and a large cup of something hot balanced in the other. Prolonged static standing with asymmetric loading, one child, one side, for extended periods is a surprisingly common recipe to hip, Sacro iliac joint pain and lower back pain. Worth knowing before you set off from Bournemouth, pack the pushchair.
The Purbeck Guitar Festival: The “I’ve Been Sitting for Four Hours” Injury
The Walled Garden, Upton Country Park, Poole: 23–24 May 2026
The Injury: Festival seating. On the ground. For two days.
The Purbeck Guitar Festival in the beautiful Walled Garden at Upton Country Park is genuinely one of the highlights of the local calendar. Two days of live music, aptly called “The Power and The Passion” set in a gorgeous Poole setting. However. If your core strength is not what it once was, sitting on the grass for an extended afternoon with no back support, spine rounding, pelvis tilting, neck craning toward the stage is a recipe for the kind of stiffness that reminds you why chairs were invented. Not to mention the dad dancing moves that are prone to disaster and potential unforeseen sports injuries, plus your children will be so embarrassed (all the more reason to dance!)
Farmer Palmer’s: No Further Comment Required
Organford, near Poole, BH16
The Injury: Self-explanatory
If you’ve been to Farmer Palmer’s near Poole with young children, you already know. I have heard about the trailer rides and they mention Foam Parties, is this the Ibiza Branch? No further clinical explanation is needed. Please book an appointment before you go, not after. You will thank me.
Overdone It? We Can Help
Half term memories are absolutely worth a slightly grumpy spine, a small price to pay. But, if you’ve overdone it by climbing on Bournemouth Pier, crouching or picnicking at Upton Country Park or simply surviving the week driving around like a maniac for hours on end, we’re here for you. The Chiropractic Clinic is sanctuary of calm and quiet, a little alone time for you even when we can talk all about you and focus on what you need to balance things out after a busy week of parenthood.
We have written an informative post on how to run a little self regulated body mobility audit and I would recommend a read through this too, it might prove useful in the meantime.
